If you don’t know what streaming service the TV show or movie you want to watch is on, you might soon be able to Google that information quickly. As more streaming services pop up and popular TV shows like Futurama and 30 Rock change platforms, Google has begun testing ways to make it easier to find TV shows and movies across streaming apps.
The world’s largest search engine is experimenting with a feature that would allow people who search for TV shows and movies to see the platforms those titles are streaming on, without leaving a Google search.
On Sunday night (Dec. 2), a search for “Christmas comedy movies” on Google’s iOS app, returned a list of titles such as Elf and Love Actually. Above the list was an option to select streaming providers like Netflix, Amazon Prime Video, Hulu, and HBO Now to see what holiday movies were available on those platforms.
It was part of a test Google was conducting in search, but the company wouldn’t confirm whether it would be rolling out to all users.
“We’re always experimenting with new ways to help people find relevant information through Search,” a spokesperson for Google told Quartz, when asked about the feature. “We don’t have anything to announce at this time.”
Earlier this year, Google began working with dozens of streaming companies to make their content libraries searchable in the Google Play Movies & TV app, TechCrunch reported. It appears the company is toying with bringing that feature to other Google products as well. It would expand on tools Google already uses to help people find popular titles online. A later search for the movie Love Actually on the desktop version of Google Chrome, for instance, returned a list of six streaming services where the film was available to rent, buy, or watch through a subscription service.
Google is not the only one vying to become the TV guide for streaming video—Apple’s TV app also allows people to search for content across apps, and platforms like JustWatch have search engines built specifically for finding where titles are streaming.
